The ââ¬Å"Disadvantages of Being Educatedâ⬠examines contemporary societyââ¬â¢s preference for building specialized skills at the expense of liberal education. Albert Knock believes that todayââ¬â¢s curricula have changed its orientation from helping create the Renaissance Man from the tabula rasa into the mechanic of Ford or the programmer of Silicon Valley. Knock pointed out that this is training and should not be synonymous with education. We will write a custom essay sample on Knockââ¬â¢s Educated Man or any similar topic only for you Order Now Being proficient or trained in something could categorize one as trained but not educated. Training is not synonymous to having been educated. Knockââ¬â¢s man has cultivated his intellect and character to the point where his options for the future included, in his words, ââ¬Å"what he could become and be instead of what he could get and doâ⬠. What is surprising for him is contemporary societyââ¬â¢s not distinguishing between the difference between training and education which was not the case before. During the Medieval period, scholars of classical works were looked upon as learned men. The cobbler, builder, stonemasons, tinkerers, and town criers were on a subordinate level far below that of the scholastics. Carrying on with Knockââ¬â¢s line of thought, we could imagine the manual laborers of the Dark Ages as having become shoe stylists and fashion models, engineers, computer programmers and technicians, and TV hosts of today who are good in their fields and perhaps below mediocre in dialectics. Yet, the honor of having ââ¬Å"made itâ⬠is easily applied to them by contemporary society than to the stereotyped harried-looking teacher of a university. Knock has nothing against the emphasis on specialization. He argued that specialization and liberal education are relevant. Both could be had instead of having one being preferred at the expense of the other. Knock expressed regret this is not so today. The educated man that he had in mind would be hard put to find his place in todayââ¬â¢s modern setting. His educated man is open to other fields of interests that would encourage the thinking process: argue the ills of society, participate in dialectics, and develop a mind that is always inquiring and trying to discover what is good for the best kind of life. Since todayââ¬â¢s trend in life is getting the proper or specialized skill that could ensure one a high-paying job, Knockââ¬â¢s educated man would have difficulty connecting with his contemporaries. He would not be in agreement with their having narrowing the focus of their concentration and energy to the mundane ambition of having an eight- to- five job that could buy them a Superbowl ticket and ensure a healthy pension after working as a cog or bolt in an assembly line. He would not even care to become the main nut in that assembly line. Each field created its own complexities and somebody having found himself a niche in his chosen field could claim a consultancy fee. I could be a consultant to the Tupperware Company if my scientific expertise resulted to inventing a fireproof plastic. The skill acquired in such a field may be hopelessly irrelevant during the Renaissance period but the pay is hopefully and insanely more than sufficient to ensure a comfortable life while still pursuing new plastic discoveries. One can only stay in the business if he or she will continue to update with new developments or make new developments himself. Failure to do so would condemn oneself to irrelevance in his chosen field. Meaning, the acquisition of knowledge on plastics will have to continue until the moment I die, perhaps induced by having to work with plastic. The competition for the American dream is rigid and I could not afford to pause for a breath asking the meaning of life while everybody else is plunging down to their success. As a student, Knock would prefer me to be the educated man that he has in mind. He wouldnââ¬â¢t agree to my cultivating a mindset that looks forward to having just a job to enable me to pay for my daily meals, ensure payment for my cable bills, and after work enabling me to be a couch potato. Knock would love see me entertain ideas for ideasââ¬â¢ sake and look at them as an educated man would look: objectively and disinterestedly. Knock perhaps sees the mainstream as a flock of sheep narrowing their vision on the grass before them and seldom raising their heads to appreciate the greater perspective. For most of us-including me- the trend is acquiring skills; the more specialized the skill, the greater the opportunity for a well-placed and well-paying job. The past-paced world that we have today is unkind to thinkers. Why pursue the meaning of life when what is life has already been defined by the American dream? Consumerist society measures a man by his capability to purchase the hottest and the latest pick. For someone to indulge in the search for the meaning of life would be condemning oneself to a meaningless life of penury and from the viewpoint of the mainstream-irrelevance. The social construct on success has already been insinuated, defined, and considered as an end. Knock may quote Longfellow and implore me, ââ¬Å"Be not like dumb, driven cattle, be the hero in the strifeâ⬠. Yes, I have already heard it in the required subjects in the first year and it is difficult to indulge myself in them when I am about to major in something useful. History, reexamining its ills, could not buy my cappuccino at Starbucks; Moliere and his wit could not pay for my taxicab fare; and I have no time to waste on Kantââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Critique on Pure Reasonâ⬠when I have to attend a workshop on plastics. Free thinking could free the soul, nourish the intellect, and strengthen the character. This is quite noble and at best, the preoccupation of the Renaissance Man. This is tempting but it would be difficult to explain myself to my friends in when we met to socialize or even to my family during a reunion. How to cite Knockââ¬â¢s Educated Man, Papers

Question: Write a report on the topic water quality management. Answer: Abstract The report is prepared on the topic water quality management and it consists information on WSUD technologies and how it works to effect storm water quality. There are various technologies which can be used for water management like permeable pavement, constructed wetland, green roof and bio filtration system etc. hence, a particular technology will be selected from the above mentioned and a review would be given on the same. Report also consists of some new innovations which can be made for enhancing water quality management resources. Introduction WSUD is known to be called as water-sensitive urban design. It is land planning and designing technically through an engineering approach which helps the urban water cycle along with the groundwater, storm water, wastewater and water supply management to be moulded in an urban design for minimising degradation of environment. It also helps in improving recreational and aesthetic appeal of water cycle. This process is differently known as low impact development (LID) in the United states and the term WSUD is known in Australia and the middle east region. Whereas, in United Kingdom, it is known as SUDS i.e. sustainable urban drainage system (Vymazal, 2010). The best use of technology is made in storm water quality treatment and for the selection is a treatment in the same, there is a system of process which has to be followed for choosing an appropriate treatment. This process consists of knowing treatments approaches, treatment training, then hybrid the systems, researching the treatments (Vymazal, 2010). It is important to understand nature of catchment, then determining suitable measures for treatment, guessing optimal measures, know who and how will do the process and then developing detailed design of storm water system (Rawstrone, 2009). From the above types of treatments mentioned in the abstract, one is green roofs. This process is very much helpful for controlling and managing the storm water. Green roofs are also known as vegetated covers on the roof. They can be named as nature roofs, living roofs or the eco roofs. In this process, a thin layer of different plants is grown on the top of the roof (Rawstrone, 2009). This type of planting does not consist of a group of plants potted in pots. It is a kind of conventional roof extended which consists of installation of layers of plants, membranes and substrates. This technology is no new to the world. Even in history, green roofs were used widely hundreds of years ago. This helped keeping the house in a normal temperature. In the modern era, people started making green roofs popular as they help in reducing water wastage and preventing storm water from running off the roofs adding an additional space for greenery (Brodie, 2012). (www.waterqualitymanagement.com) Role of Wsud in Storm Water Control Storm water control and management is not only a necessity but also an ethical support by the humans to the nature. Water is an important resource to us and it must be given the deserved importance by one and all. Hence, the storm water shouldnt get wasted. Green roofs are an initiative taken, by which the water coming from rains and storms is used for growth of plants and increasing greenery. This not only saves water but also helps in increasing plantation in the environment (Vymazal, 2010). Some more roles played by WSUD- Manages catchments which maintains and improves resources of water. It helps in managing and avoiding risk to human life and their property. It also ensures an efficient and good use of the water. This way the economical, ethical, cultural and social values are maintained. Green Roof Technolohy- A Help (How?) Green roofs are helpful- It is an easy, effective way of beautifying environment. These help in contributing to the landfilling diversion. With the roofs, the water gets stored and then taken by plants and then returned to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration. These roofs moderate temperature and act as natural air filter. Manages the storm water from running off. The temperature of cities can be kept moderated through green roofs at the time of extensive summers and winters. Reduce extensive dust in the atmosphere. The plants help by capturing and atmospheric depositions and pollutants. It also filters noxious and harmful gases (Gardiner and Hardy, 2005). Hence, we come to an answer that green roofs are an extremely useful way of WSUD in the cities and countries to manage storm waters and treat it the right way naturally (Ahammed, Hewa, and Argue, 2012). It involves less cost and uses low maintenance by the humans for working properly for several years. Figure 1 (www.mainsoneco.com) Other Methods Which Come Under Wsud- Permeable pavement- this method consists of a range of materials and different techniques which are sustainable, made for permeable pavements. These are either with a base or a subbase which allows storm water to move through surface. It reduces run off, traps the suspension of solids and filters the pollutants in water. Constructed wetland- this is an artificial wetland, also known as CW. It is created for treating the discharge from wastewater in industries and the storm water run-off. Bio filtration system- it is a pollution controlling system made to save aquaculture through the bio filters created. The dissolved substances and the colloidal pollutants are generally very harmful for the environment and the people (Ahammed, Hewa, and Argue, 2012). These are needed to be removed from the storm water in the ponds and even normal households. Hence, the WSUD treatments help in removing these harmful pollutants from the storm water and wastewater. The harmful pollutants which are removed through treatment are- TSS, Tot-P, Tot-N, COD, BOD, pathogens and heavy metals (Vymazal, 2010). Improvements Which can be Made WSUD is in itself a very innovative and effective technology for the treatment of water. Especially the storm waters can be beautifully, without wasting or harming any natural resource gets treated by green roof and pavement method (Beecham and Chowdhury, 2012). Except this, the engineers and technicians can work on making processes easier and of lesser cost while setting up. In this case, many houses will welcome the methods. Government can work and advertise to make the strategies more popular (Vymazal, 2010). By taking up ways to reduce renewal and maintenance cost can also help (Beecham and Chowdhury, 2012). Some ways like collecting storm water and then treating it for getting pure water of usage can also be given thought as new innovations. (www.greenroofs.org) Summary At the end, we come to know that WSUD is known as water sensitive urban design. It is a way of land planning and designing a base or set up by which the urban water is treated (Vymazal, 2010). Storm water needs a good treatment plant as much of its volume is wasted through run off. Hence, WSUD provides a base for storm water treatment also. There are several ways under WSUD by which management of storm water can be done but as discussed in the report, green roofing is a beautiful and successful way by which run off of water can be reduced and used for another good (Ahammed, Hewa, and Argue, 2012). Green roof uses a technology of growing plants on the roof of a house. These are not potted but layered beautifully and technically to absorb water for their growth and allow precipitation. It also helps in cleaning pollutants, control dust and maintaining moderate temperature (Gardiner and Hardy, 2005). Hence, WSUD techniques must be motivated by the government as well as common public to treat water carefully and allow nature and environment to flourish as well. Abstract The essay covers the role of prejudice in wars in Iraq. It defines prejudice and explains its role and effects. Other forms or factors of prejudice such as racism and discrimination are explained. The main causes of prejudice are explained and how they can be used to resolve and be used for the benefit of fighting discrimination and stereotyping. Prejudice is commonly used with discrimination and stereotyping since they have the same meaning, and go hand in hand. Prejudice in psychology is the science that affects the social mind. They are used to disintegrate people instead of bringing them together as one. It breaks relationships which may exists between individuals or groups even if the relationship is negative like in the cases of military patriotism (Plous, 2003). War has been commonly used to dehumanize groups of people with the intention of killing or casualties. The Iraq war is the most popular in describing prejudice. The U.S invaded Iraq because it is claimed that Muslims from Iraq, who are popularly known to carry out terrorism (jihad) bombed the Twin Towers on the 911 incident. The terrorists retaliated by bombing U.S, thus the cycle of war continues. This creates a gap between the two as the Muslims see themselves different from us and we also see ourselves different from them, thus creating a gap between the humans. Prejudice has played many roles, the main one being loss of human life, which is generated via war. Those participating in these wars are encouraged by bei ng honored and valued, this being the reason as to why war and prejudice never end. Many lie about what war is and itsââ¬â¢ consequences by sugar coating it and in some instances, lie of their involvement. Those responsible end up being awarded medals or excuses are given, which leave them free without trial or punishment. It clearly portrays racism, sexism, heterosexism and exploitation of indigenous people, animals and the environment at large as some of the major effects that bring about human conflict and enmity. Racism has led to increased prejudice, which is the main cause of ethnic conflicts and wars in the Middle East and Africa whereas in other states, it has led to debates and controversies on race, racism, nationalism and multiculturalism. Other genocides have occurred in Bosnia and Kosovo. These events have led to researches on the issues of prejudice and racism. Theories have emerged especially on psychological theories which adversely contribute to our knowledge on this disturbing social issue, and offer assistance on how the acquired knowledge maybe put into practice in understanding and resolving intergroup oppression and conflicts. Social researches have been brought forward arguing that prejudice and racism manifest themselves at different levels which include institutional, individualââ¬â¢s, intergroup or even interpersonal (Plous, 2003). To understand prejudice in relation to psychology, it may be related to discrimination or one having negative attitudes towards someone else basically because he or she belongs to a certain group. With Iraq, U.S discriminated it since it belonged to the Al Qaeda group, which was a terrorist group an d was attacking it and killing many innocent Americans. In the U.S ââ¬â Iraq war, American soldiers were seen on the media and internet laughing and torturing Iraqi prisoners, while another terrorist group, still in Iraq, showed the video of an Iraqi slaughtering an American civilian. Others had photos showing an Iraq mob killing four American military then hanging them on March 31st. These murders and tortures clearly show a sign of hatred, enmity and inhumanity among the humans. If mobs and groups of terrorists can carry out the same, one is left to wonder what effect or impact trained military personnel could have like that of the U.S especially on their mortal enemy. This becomes really hard for the human activists such as the Red Cross, United Nations and Africa Union to promote peace and eliminate prejudice. Reason for this is that many leaders such as the religious, military and political leaders tolerate this kind of behaviors without bring the culprits into justice. The U.S being the leading in music and film making exercise prejudice by discriminating the Muslim race, in that, they feed civilians with discrimination information in form of movies and music. We expect the military to behave in an extra ordinary manner forgetting that they are also humans who are subject to hatred and discrimination waves against the Iraqis and the Muslim in general as the public is. Advertising We will write a custom term paper sample on Role of prejudice in wars in Iraq specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Some military leaders have made anti- Muslim speeches to the public and on live broadcasts while in uniform and no form of confrontation or warning was done. He went ahead and authorized for both sexual and physical abuse of the Iraqi prisoners. Prejudice is mainly promoted by hate speeches from popular leaders, government actions and the media (Clow and Esses, 2007). The three lead to the widespread of preju dice across the world which results into wars and conflicts between countries, groups or even individuals. Government actions such as interrogations, police detention without trials, profiling at subways and airports, police raids among others are some of the effects causing mainly the Muslims and black\brown colored people feeling insecure and discriminated as they are the main suspects in crimes and terrorist actions. The media behaves irresponsible through talks, shows as well as news as the government can control any information that would expose it to the public but any other act related to a black colored or Muslim related story is very quick to publish and expose it. In the previous years Fight against prejudice took another turn when groups and factions forbid any public expression that would lead or encourage prejudice and discrimination of whatsoever manner. For example, some editorialists accompanied by protestors confronted the president of Rutgers University asking h im to step down for discriminating the blacks and calling them ââ¬Å"the disadvantaged and without genetic, hereditary backgroundâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Others like Ralph Reed called for a press conference to urge people to denounce the habit of name calling especially with regards to race and color. Citizens can assist in promoting peace and fight against prejudice in many ways, although eliminating prejudice totally will not be possible since everyone has their own motives and as long as freedom for expression remains, hate speeches and other kinds of prejudice will prevail. This is a form of promoting peace and fighting prejudice as the school policies do not tolerate such speeches (Brochu, and Esses, 2009). An effective way of promoting peace is via the media. Using the internet, radio, television, computers and printing can be very effective to make humans understand the need and importance of peace. Media if not controlled and well monitored may lead to war as was the case with the Iraq war in 1993. This is due to the civilians being misinformed due to the unverified information and misrepresentation of statements. Some withhold or release de-sensationalizing information which does not promote peace especially in times of war or near war, thus, steering up war and conflicts. Education in schools mainly junior, high school and colleges should be used to teach students about peace since they interact mostly with others from different backgrounds and of different races. Dialogue should be used and allowed as everyone has a right to express themselves as long as it does not promote prejudice in any way. The government and leaders should strictly forbid and contain prejudice by laying out strict and just policies, rules and repercussions and making them known to all (Esses., et al, 2008). Symposiums and conferences should be encouraged and all races should be encouraged and everyoneââ¬â¢s view should be addressed equally without favoring anyone and discriminating the others. Respect for othersââ¬â¢ religion should be addressed and adhered to promptly. Another thing to note is that revenge always accelerates war rather than peace. Dr King advocated for peace and called it ââ¬Å"not the absence of violence, but the presence of justice,â⬠(Zucchino, 2004). On elections day, we should strive to elect leaders who know the meaning of peace and are willing to go a n extra mile to achieve it and ensure that justice is served to those who seek it. Others may perceive peace inform of justice as those who do wrong by encouraging war or murder to be taken for trial and prosecuted. Also to understand the roots of evil like war, terrorism, murder and any other form of inhuman act (Berreby, 2005). The law should be closely followed as it calls on us to follow the procedures laid in order to protect innocent lives, apprehend calmly rather than to use force and destroy property and lives. Citizens can decide to reject the U.S strategies used by the government and advocate for those that respond to terrorism in a positive and polite way by using the necessary resources to prosecute international criminals. During debates the root causes of prejudice and any other source of conflicts that is likely to stir up war or hatred should be addressed and not only the symptoms and effects. Together as one, we should recognize and appreciate the other parties ar e taking. This way United States is able to respond effectively and receive assistance from the international body if we are able to identify our role in promoting peace and fighting terrorism. Challenge the elected leaders to dialogue with Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders in order to formulate solutions and work together to encourage peace and spread it globally. Ask leaders to change from engaging in wars through bombing Iraq to aiding the starving Muslims who majority are homeless and dying. Increasing the amount of multilateral organizations which are not based on the fact that one is with us or against us, but those that serve all equally without discrimination. Finally, activists and unions can foster the understanding of various cultures and advocate for reconciliation and peace among the inter cultural community (Reynolds, 2005). In conclusion, prejudice and discrimination cannot be completely eradicated but can be controlled or used to the advantage of promoting peace and rec onciliation among the human race. The main perpetrators of prejudice are the government actions which can decide whether or not the war will stop or will continue. Media which has the most effect as can be manipulated to steer up war by the government or other popular individuals and hate speeches on live broadcast by prominent leaders such as the military, religious and political leaders. Peace is inevitable since if war erupts only innocent lives are sacrificed and many become displaced but by promoting peace, love and unity irrespective of color or background, a lot can be achieved with the use of those resources being diverted elsewhere like in invention or assisting catastrophic hit areas or even venturing to the out a space. These actions will not be effective in a year or two or even five years time but will be a gradual process which the following generations will benefit from and the world will be a conducive environment to live in without fear. Managing change - Essay Example The different steps associated with change management programs have been put forth by various researchers. Out of them the most prominent model is the eight step managing process of change as proposed by Kotter (1996) (Todnem, 2005, p.370). The process begins with the creation of a sense of urgency in the organization, i.e., major changes necessitate a sense of motivation among relevant people who can sense a potential crisis in the organization. This can arise due to lost markets, reduced profits, and entry of competitors, lost customers or even unacceptable products and services. Such aspects lay down the foundation for change requirements in the organization. This is followed by putting together of a guiding team or a group of enthusiasts who would recognize the indispensability and value of the change. The third step requires creating a vision and a strategy which requires motivating people, giving them a direction and aligning their efforts and processes. Vision gives employees the depiction that each one involved carries and evokes on a regular basis to ensure that the course does not get deviated. The next step is to communicate the vision to all subjects concerned. It is crucial to spread the change message across the organization through repetitive activities through as many channels as possible. Empowering people is the next step in which barriers and obstacles to the change are removed in order to remove hindrances which discourage people to take up the change. Following this step is to create momentum for the change by consolidating the accomplishments and allowing and enabling further changes. The final step is to implant the new approach into the culture of the organization (Tcherpokov, 2006, p.1-2). The change process was initiated in British Airways on account of consistent financial losses over a period of time, shrinking of the cabin crew, diminishing profits, diminishing share of the market, technological changes and cultural changes. The aim of the change process was to enhance organizational efficiency, reduce costs through restructuring of the organizational structure and strategy. The companyââ¬â¢s mission and idea for the change process was communicated across all levels of the organization on a repetitive basis so as to ensure its acceptance and absorption into the system. Moreover, as per the steps put forth by Kotter (1996), British Airways implemented the change process by empowering individuals in the organization to actively participate in the change. This was achieved through training of staffs in the desired direction such as to make them efficient not only to participate in the change but also develop the changed culture throughout the organizational hierarchy. The idea was to bring about the productivity and performance improvement through the people. Only after the idea for the change was inculcated into the organizational culture, it could be implemented successfully. When the changed processes, norm s, activities were completely ingrained into the culture of the organization the results were seen to be long lasting and a new culture was successfully developed in British Airways (Tcherpokov, 2006, p.2).
